The short answer

Influencer marketing buys reach: a creator posts about your brand to their own audience. UGC buys content: a creator makes videos that you publish and run as ads. Many brands use both, but if your main goal is better-performing ad creative, UGC is usually the more direct route.

When UGC is the better choice

  • Your ad account needs a steady supply of new creative to fight fatigue.
  • You want to test many hooks and angles quickly.
  • You need product page or marketplace videos that answer buyer questions.
  • You want to own the content and reuse it across channels.

When influencer marketing is the better choice

  • You're launching a brand and need awareness within a specific community.
  • The creator's personal endorsement and audience trust are the point.
  • You want social proof in the form of a recognisable name.

Combining the two

A common approach is to brief creators for UGC, then ask the best performers to also post to their own audience, or to allow their handle to be used in ads (whitelisting or TikTok Spark Ads). That gives you owned creative and creator credibility. Whatever the mix, anything posted as part of a paid deal must be labelled as an ad under UK rules.

FAQs

Do UGC creators need lots of followers?

No. For commissioned UGC, the brand runs the videos itself, so on-camera delivery and video quality matter much more than follower count.

Which is cheaper, UGC or influencer marketing?

It depends on the creator and the rights needed, but because UGC isn't priced on audience size, it's often more cost-effective for producing ad creative at volume.
